Essential vocabulary for IB MYP Arts (Music)

Music Theory

MelodyA sequence of single notes that form a recognisable musical line
HarmonyThe combination of simultaneously sounded notes to produce chords and progressions
RhythmThe pattern of sounds and silences in time
TempoThe speed at which a piece of music is performed (measured in BPM)
DynamicsThe volume of sound in music, ranging from pianissimo (pp) to fortissimo (ff)
TextureThe way melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic materials are combined (e.g. monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic)
TimbreThe quality or "colour" of a sound that distinguishes one instrument or voice from another
