Essential vocabulary for IB MYP Visual Art
Elements of Art
| Line | A mark made by a moving point; can vary in width, direction, and length |
| Shape | A flat, enclosed area defined by line, colour, or value (2D) |
| Form | A three-dimensional shape with height, width, and depth |
| Space | The area around, between, or within objects; positive and negative |
| Colour | The visual property produced by light; described by hue, value, and intensity |
| Value | The lightness or darkness of a colour or tone |
| Texture | The surface quality of an object; actual (tactile) or implied (visual) |
Principles of Design
| Balance | The distribution of visual weight; symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial |
| Contrast | The juxtaposition of different elements to create visual interest |
| Emphasis | The focal point or area of dominance in a composition |
| Movement | The path the viewer's eye follows through a work of art |
| Pattern | The repetition of elements in a regular or irregular arrangement |
| Rhythm | A sense of visual tempo created through repetition and variation |
| Unity | The sense of harmony and wholeness in a composition |
| Proportion | The relative size and scale of elements within a composition |
Art Movements
| Renaissance | c. 1400–1600; rebirth of classical ideals, perspective, humanism |
| Baroque | c. 1600–1750; dramatic lighting, grandeur, emotional intensity |
| Romanticism | c. 1780–1850; emotion, nature, individualism, sublime |
| Impressionism | c. 1860–1890; light, colour, everyday scenes, visible brushstrokes |
| Post-Impressionism | c. 1886–1905; expressive colour, form, and structure beyond Impressionism |
| Cubism | c. 1907–1920s; fragmented forms, multiple perspectives, geometric shapes |
| Surrealism | c. 1924–1960s; dreams, the unconscious, irrational juxtaposition |
| Abstract Expressionism | c. 1940s–1960s; gestural brushwork, spontaneous expression, large scale |
| Pop Art | c. 1950s–1970s; mass culture, advertising, irony, bold colours |
| Contemporary Art | c. 1970–present; diverse media, concepts, identity, globalisation |
