Formula Sheet & Data Booklet

For use during the course and in examinations

Atomic Structure & The Mole

Number of moles\(n = \dfrac{m}{M}\)
Number of particles\(N = n \times N_A\)
Avogadro's constant\(N_A = 6.02 \times 10^{23}\;\text{mol}^{-1}\)
Mass number\(A = Z + N\)

n = number of moles, m = mass (g), M = molar mass (g/mol), Z = atomic number, N = neutron number

Concentration & Solutions

Concentration (molarity)\(c = \dfrac{n}{V}\)
Mass concentration\(\text{conc} = \dfrac{\text{mass of solute (g)}}{\text{volume of solution (dm}^3\text{)}}\)
Dilution\(c_1 V_1 = c_2 V_2\)
Percentage by mass\(\% = \dfrac{\text{mass of solute}}{\text{mass of solution}} \times 100\)

c = concentration (mol/dm³), V = volume (dm³)

Stoichiometry & Yield

Percentage yield\(\% \text{yield} = \dfrac{\text{actual yield}}{\text{theoretical yield}} \times 100\)
Atom economy\(\% = \dfrac{M_r\text{ of desired product}}{\sum M_r\text{ of all products}} \times 100\)

Acids, Bases & pH

pH scale\(\text{pH} = -\log_{10}[\text{H}^+]\)
Hydrogen ion concentration\([\text{H}^+] = 10^{-\text{pH}}\)

pH 7 = neutral, pH < 7 = acidic, pH > 7 = alkaline

Energetics

Energy change\(Q = mc\Delta T\)
Bond energy\(\Delta H = \sum E_{\text{bonds broken}} - \sum E_{\text{bonds formed}}\)

Q = energy (J), m = mass (g), c = 4.18 J/(g·°C) for water, ΔT = temp change (°C)

Gases

Molar volume (STP)\(V_m = 22.4\;\text{dm}^3\text{/mol}\) at STP
Moles of gas\(n = \dfrac{V}{V_m}\)

STP = 0 °C and 100 kPa

Electrochemistry

EMF of a cell\(E_{\text{cell}} = E_{\text{cathode}} - E_{\text{anode}}\)

Key Constants

Avogadro's constant\(N_A = 6.02 \times 10^{23}\;\text{mol}^{-1}\)
Specific heat capacity of water\(c = 4.18\;\text{J/(g·°C)}\)
Molar volume at STP\(22.4\;\text{dm}^3\text{/mol}\)
