Parts of Speech
| Noun | A person, place, thing, or idea (e.g., happiness, London, book) |
| Verb | An action or state of being (e.g., run, think, is) |
| Adjective | Describes a noun (e.g., bright, enormous, careful) |
| Adverb | Modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb (e.g., quickly, very, silently) |
| Pronoun | Replaces a noun (e.g., he, they, it, who) |
| Preposition | Shows relationship (e.g., in, on, under, between) |
| Conjunction | Connects words/clauses (e.g., and, but, because, although) |
| Interjection | Expresses emotion (e.g., wow, ouch, alas) |
Punctuation Rules
| Full stop (.) | End of a declarative or imperative sentence |
| Comma (,) | Separates items in a list, after introductory phrases, before conjunctions in compound sentences |
| Semicolon (;) | Joins two related independent clauses without a conjunction |
| Colon (:) | Introduces a list, explanation, or elaboration |
| Apostrophe (') | Shows possession (the dog's bone) or contraction (don't = do not) |
| Speech marks ("") | Enclose direct speech; new speaker = new line |
| Question mark (?) | End of an interrogative sentence |
| Exclamation mark (!) | Shows strong emotion or emphasis; use sparingly |
PEE / PEEL Structure
| Point | State your argument or topic sentence clearly |
| Evidence | Provide a quote or example from the text to support your point |
| Explain | Analyse how/why the evidence supports your point — this is the most important part |
| Link | (PEEL only) Connect back to the question or transition to next paragraph |
Literary Device Glossary
| Simile | Comparison using "like" or "as" (as brave as a lion) |
| Metaphor | Direct comparison (time is money) |
| Personification | Giving human qualities to non-human things (the wind whispered) |
| Alliteration | Repeated consonant sounds at start of words (Peter Piper picked) |
| Hyperbole | Exaggeration for effect (I've told you a million times) |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that imitate sounds (buzz, crash, sizzle) |
| Oxymoron | Two contradictory terms together (deafening silence) |
| Irony | Gap between expectation and reality; verbal, situational, or dramatic |
| Symbolism | Using objects/colours to represent ideas (dove = peace) |
| Imagery | Vivid descriptive language appealing to the senses |
| Foreshadowing | Hints about future events in the narrative |
| Juxtaposition | Placing contrasting elements side by side for effect |

| Ethos | Appeal to credibility or authority |
| Pathos | Appeal to emotion |
| Logos | Appeal to logic, facts, and evidence |
| Tricolon | Rule of three (veni, vidi, vici) |
| Anaphora | Repetition at the start of successive clauses |
| Antithesis | Contrasting ideas in balanced phrases |
| Rhetorical question | A question not expecting an answer, to make the audience think |
