FAQ

Common questions about MYP grading

MYP grades are calculated by adding your scores from all four criteria (A, B, C, D), each marked out of 8, giving a total out of 32. This total is then converted to a final grade from 1-7 using the official IB MYP grade boundaries. For example, a total of 28-32 earns a grade 7, while 15-18 earns a grade 4. A total of 0 means no grade is awarded.
The official IB MYP grade boundaries are: Grade 1 (1-5 marks), Grade 2 (6-9 marks), Grade 3 (10-14 marks), Grade 4 (15-18 marks), Grade 5 (19-23 marks), Grade 6 (24-27 marks), Grade 7 (28-32 marks). A total score of 0 means no grade is awarded. These boundaries are the same for every MYP subject.
The highest grade in the IB MYP is a 7, which requires a total of 28-32 marks across all four criteria. This means averaging 7-8 on each criterion. The maximum possible score across all 8 MYP subjects is 56 (8 subjects times 7 per subject) - which is where Project 56 gets its name.
You need at least 28 marks out of 32 to achieve a grade 7 in any MYP subject. With four criteria each marked out of 8, this means you need to score very highly across all four - averaging at least 7 per criterion. Consistent practice across all criteria is key to reaching this top band.
Yes. The MYP grade boundaries are standardized across all subjects in the IB Middle Years Programme. Whether you are studying Maths, Sciences, Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Arts, Design, or Physical and Health Education, the same boundary table applies. Each criterion is marked 0-8, the total is out of 32, and the same conversion table determines your final 1-7 grade.
